what people are saying
“Excellent gym with a very welcoming group of folks. If you're in the area and are considering bJJ for you or your kids I would definitely recommend it. The place has a ton of members, but it still feels tightly knit and receptive to new folks.”
- Serena J.
“NKYMAA and the Para Bellum BJJ program are more than just a gym and training group…it’s a family. Whether you are just starting your martial arts journey, a seasoned competitor, or just looking to make friends and get in shape….this is the place for you!!!”
- Brian E.
“Dropped into an open mat while out of town for a wedding. Everyone was super welcoming. The gym, mats, and locker room was well kept and clean. 10/10 recommend if you’re in Cinci or NKY.”
- Frank B.

New to Para Bellum?
You’re in the right place.
Whether you're brand new to martial arts, a seasoned veteran, or just switching gyms, we’re excited to welcome you to Para Bellum Combat Sports. Our mission is to create a space where people of all ages and skill levels can train, grow, and thrive — on and off the mat.
This guide will help you get started, answer your first questions, and give you a feel for what to expect.
-
Not at all. Most of our students start with zero background in martial arts. Our classes are beginner-friendly and our instructors are here to help you every step of the way.
-
Wear tight fitting athletic clothing and bring a water bottle. We’ll provide any gear you need for your trial class (like a gi or gloves if applicable).
Pro tip: bring slide-on shoes for easy on and off mat wear. No shoes (other than wrestling shoes when appropriate) are allowed on the mat. A lot of regulars bring flip flops or athletic slides for in-between use.
-
We offer classes for kids as young as 5, teens, and adults of all ages. Martial arts truly is for everyone.
-
Absolutely not. Martial arts is about personal growth. We meet you where you are and help you improve at your own pace.
-
Yes. While many of our members train for fitness or self-defense, we also offer advanced training for those interested in competing in BJJ or striking sports, HOWEVER; we are not a fighting/MMA gym. There’s rolling (a.k.a. sparring) and open mats weekly, but no internal organized fights. All competitions are put on by external companies and leagues, and are at your own expense.
-
That depends on your goals. Many students start with 1 - 2 classes a week. We’ll help you build a schedule that works for your lifestyle.
-
We’re gonna be honest, it’s overwhelming to walk into our gym for the first time. We recommend coming 15 minutes early to sign waviers and get situated. Look for someone behind the desk, or look for someone on the mats getting class started. Our instructors love first timers and will be happy to point you in the right direction, or help you get started in class. When in doubt, just ask any sweaty person where to go.
-
We have a large parking lot located directly across the street, next to the Lagoon Salon. There’s also street parking all around.

We offer classes for children as young as 5 years old. Our programs are designed to grow with your child, with age-appropriate instruction, structure, and goals. Our coaches do a great job balancing fun and discipline.
-
Our core focus is on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and striking fundamentals. All are taught in a safe, structured, and fun environment. Kids learn self-defense, movement, teamwork, and how to manage challenges in a healthy, respectful way.
-
Self-discipline and focus
Respect for others
Confidence in their abilities
Resilience and patience
Better behavior and emotional control
These lessons often carry over to school, home, and everyday life.
-
Safety is our top priority. Classes are led by trained, experienced instructors with a focus on control, technique, and positive reinforcement. We group students by age and skill to ensure appropriate pacing and supervision.
-
For your child’s first class, they can wear athletic clothes (like a T-shirt and shorts or leggings). We’ll provide any necessary equipment for trial classes. If they continue, we’ll recommend the appropriate uniform (gi or gear) based on the class.
-
Absolutely. We encourage it! Watching your child grow and succeed is part of the journey. We just ask that you allow instructors to lead the class without interruption so your child (and others) can stay focused. “CAT CALLING” or distracting your kid from the bleachers will not be tolerated. We also ask you leave any non-class taking kiddos at home, as the gym is small and can becoming overfilled fast.
-
Yes. As your child trains consistently and demonstrates growth, they’ll have the opportunity to advance in rank. Promotions are based on effort, attitude, attendance, and skill development — not just time on the mat.

Belt promotions are earned through consistent attendance, technical skill, effort, attitude, and time on the mat. We don’t promote based on shortcuts — we reward growth, humility, and a dedication to learning. Each belt is a milestone in a long-term journey, and our coaches will guide you every step of the way.
-
Promotions are typically held 1-2 times per year, though students can be promoted at any time based on progress. We also use stripes to mark your development between belt levels and keep you motivated.
-
Open Mat is unstructured training time where members can roll, drill, or get extra work in. It’s open to EVERYONE, even non-gym members, and is a great opportunity to apply what you’ve learned, ask questions, or get in extra practice at your own pace.
-
Our instructors are here to help. Just ask! We offer one-on-one private lessons, small group sessions, and open mat guidance. You can also talk to your coach after class if you’re stuck on a technique or want feedback.
-
Our coaches are experienced martial artists, many of whom hold brown or black belts, fight experience, and years of teaching under their belts. More importantly, they are passionate mentors who care about helping you grow — on and off the mat.
-
Yes — we love to see students grow into leaders. Those interested in coaching can express interest with our head instructor. We look for traits like consistency, skill, humility, leadership, and a desire to help others succeed.
-
If you feel unsafe at any time, speak up. Our instructors are trained to handle undue aggression or inappropriate behavior. No mat bullies, targeted attacks, or hateful behavior of any kind will be tolerated.
-
Yes! Stop in during class time to buy some merch. Grab someone from the desk or an instructor and they’ll get you squared away.
